December 10, 2010COUNTY WORK ON AVALON CANAL BRIDGE TO BEGIN IN SEPTEMBER
August 12, 2010(Avalon, NJ)—Some major rehabilitation work on the Avalon Canal Bridge is expected to begin in September, 2010, according to Cape May County Engineer Dale Foster. The bridge work will take several months, and is expected to conclude in June, 2011.
The canal bridge is the small bridge located on Avalon Boulevard, just west of the intersection of 30th Street and Ocean Drive. According to the contractor, the mobilization of equipment to the site of the project is expected to begin the day after Labor Day, September 7th. Work will continue through the fall, winter, and spring, and conclude on or about June 9, 2011. Actual construction work on the bridge will begin on or about September 20th, 2010.
Engineers from Hatch Mott MacDonald attended a pre-construction meeting for the project on August 6th. The actual daily work hours on the bridge project are 7:00am-3:30pm, with some later hours when necessary. The general contractor for the project is Mugrose Construction Inc. of West Caldwell, New Jersey. The construction engineer is Gibson Associates of Ocean View, New Jersey.
The canal bridge will remain open during the rehabilitation work; some lane closures are possible at times. Lane closures shall end prior to Memorial Day Weekend, 2011.
A conduit replacement project will also be starting in early September, 2010 at the intersection of 30th Street and Ocean Drive. The project will last approximately two weeks, and will also include some overhead wire work to be conducted by the county. This additional work is not associated with the bridge project.
The Avalon Canal Bridge is 43 years old, and has a concrete deck that is 158 feet long. The bridge is in a deteriorated condition, containing patch work and spalls. Spalls are areas on the deck of the bridge made of concrete that have popped up and broken free.
This rehabilitation and widening project consists of replacing the concrete deck, and widening the bridge approximately 12 feet to the south to accommodate an eastbound dedicated left turn lane. The rehabilitated bridge will have a 16-foot wide bicycle compatible travel lane in each direction, one 12-foot wide eastbound dedicated left turn lane and one four-foot wide sidewalk on the north side.
The widening of the bridge requires driving new piles to support the extended bridge piers and abutments. Three new pre-stressed concrete box beams will be added to the structure to carry the road surface. The new concrete deck will be reinforced with epoxy-coated reinforcement steel. The existing deck only had wire mesh for reinforcement.
Other work under this project consists of repairing the deteriorated bulkheads at the bridge abutments, resurfacing the approaches to accommodate the widening of the bridge and upgrading the guide rail systems approaching the bridge. The project will require coordinating the relocation of Atlantic City Electric, Comcast, and Verizon facilities to accommodate the modifications to the bridge.
